Together with our partners, we successfully developed solutions within the BeauCoup project that bring cultural heritage closer to older adults and vulnerable groups. All solutions are inclusive and multisensory, tailored to different needs, and designed for both group and individual use.
We developed three innovative solutions:
-
The Bag – a backpack with tactile and digital postcards, filled with cultural content;
-
The Box – a multisensory “magic box” with scents, 3D replicas, and audio content;
-
The Screen – a web application for virtual exhibitions and guided tours, with adaptations for visually and hearing-impaired users.
These solutions are now available to museums, which can freely choose the content and scenarios they want to offer to their audiences, especially day centres and care homes for the elderly.
The quality and thoughtfulness of the solutions are reflected in the broad involvement throughout the project:
223 older adults over the age of 65 (primary users), 115 museum and care home staff (secondary users), and 53 museum or care home directors (tertiary users) participated.
All participants were involved in co-creation workshops, iterative testing, and final validation. Activities took place in Austria, Italy, Slovenia, Switzerland, and Portugal.
A total of 936 evaluations were collected during workshops and events. Final validation showed positive responses from all three target groups and revealed broader usability of the solutions (e.g., for schools and tourism).
Feelif Solution for Museums – Multisensory Cards and Postcards
Video of the Feelif's solution
As part of the BeauCoup project, Feelif developed an inclusive and innovative solution designed specifically for older adults and people with visual impairments, enabling them to experience artworks, museum artefacts, and cultural heritage in a completely new way – without needing to visit a museum physically.
We created a unique tactile card with an image and QR code that, when scanned, opens Feelif’s digital content on a tablet. The card is placed directly on the tablet’s screen. The tablet is equipped with a case that keeps the card in place to prevent it from shifting during use.
The dedicated Feelif application accurately detects finger movement on the tactile image and the screen beneath it, simultaneously narrating information about the object being touched. In addition to voice guidance, users experience varying vibrations and hear realistic sounds from nature and the environment. The tactile design of the card helps users better understand the shapes of depicted objects, while the sounds of birds, wind, waves, or even music deepen the emotional connection with the story. Vibrations that change depending on the object make the experience even more exciting and accessible, even for deaf users. Users can explore the image and its content interactively, according to their own interests and pace.
Feelif cards are ideal for day centres, care homes, and hospitals, offering access to rich museum content for those unable to visit museums in person.
The solution is easy to use. Each card includes a code and simple instructions, also accessible digitally. The tablet application allows quick scanning, opening up a new, intuitive Feelif world where users can explore using just one finger.
The content is available in multiple languages, and switching between languages is simple, making the solution ideal for museums that host international guests who, for various reasons, cannot visit in person.
Feelif also offers postcard-sized tactile cards, available for purchase by visitors who want to gift someone a truly unique experience. By scanning the code on the Feelif postcard, the recipient gains access to a special museum application, learns more about the object in the image, and can explore it multisensorially right on their smartphone. But that’s not all – the postcard also unlocks additional digital content and can serve as a museum ticket.
With the Feelif solution, museums can become truly inclusive, accessible, and engaging.
